Japanese companies leaving China at record pace amid safety concerns

Japanese companies operating in China have dropped to a record low of 10,118 as of June 2026. Data from Teikoku Databank shows over 4,000 firms fully withdrew in the last two years. Many businesses are shifting focus to the U.S. market, citing a slowing Chinese economy, diplomatic tensions, and concerns that their employees in China feel increasingly unsafe.
